At another point Juliet is having a powerful moment with a girlfriend who truly sees her, and she tells the girlfriend her middle name, which is Milagros. And that’s far from the only moment that is barely built towards. My reaction to Juliet’s haircut was to ask oh, was this not already what she looked like? I didn’t feel any of the release.

Her hair is something that rarely, if ever, comes up before this point… and the cover image spoils this moment. But up until that moment I hadn’t realized that Juliet had long, thick, feminine hair. The scene itself is written as if it is extremely emotionally cathartic, and as if it has been a long time coming. Towards the end of the book, Juliet gets a dramatic hairstyle that makes her feel more in touch with her identity. A lot of the most emotional moments are undercut by the way they are set up. The ideas behind it are good, but the execution is a bit…lacking. Overall, I’m underwhelmed by Juliet Takes a Breath.
